Cheryl Lee, Partner / Managing Director

I graduated from UBC with a degree in Economics and Urban Studies in 1986.  I moved right away into my career in the tourism industry, starting in the Guest Services Division of Expo 86 in Vancouver, B.C.   I then moved to Toronto where I worked for the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and was part of a team to present Toronto as a meetings and convention destination to companies and associations worldwide.  In 1991, I joined the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation in the Overseas Marketing Department.

In 1992, I returned to B.C. with my family and set up a tourism consulting business based in the Thompson Okanagan region.  My clients ranged from family-owned tourism businesses, to attractions, to work with the local tourism associations.  I also became a part time instructor at Thompson River University in the Tourism Program.  Then, in 1997, l joined MLI as a business partner with Mike Ruby and Bev MacWilliams. 

What I love about MLI Homestay:  I enjoy seeing families we know in communities across Canada have the opportunity to share all their favourite things about “home” and “family” with their special visiting guests from overseas.  I also love to see our team of staff and our host families help each visitor to “try new things” and to leave our MLI Homestay program feeling they have stretched and grown in ways that they had not expected.  Not only do the visitors and hosts become friends, but their time together has a permanent impact on how they each think going forward.  That is a great experience to be even a small part of!
